Review of the bollywood movie Traffic

Traffic

Director –   Rajesh Pillai
Producers –  Deepak Dhar
                      Sameer Gogate
                           Sameer Rajendran
        Writer –    Bobby and Sanjay
    Starring –    Manoj Bajpayee
                      Jimmy Shergill
                  Divya Dutta

The movie is a remake of Malayalam film with same name “Traffic” in 2011; it is a thriller road movie in Hindi. It includes various events happened in a single day. All characters are strangers from each other but circumstances forces them to work together and connect with the same link which is superstar Dev Kapoor’s daughter who is sick and needs urgent heart transplant in the hospital of Pune, on the other side in the Mumbai a journalist Rehan (Visha Singh) who was going to take an interview of Dev Kapoor and meets an accident and declared that he would not be able to get back his life. Doctors have tried to convince Rehan’s parents to donate his heart but they were not ready but finally they donated their son’s heart.

This was the time when the mission of transporting heart by road has begun. Because of rain and low visibility it was not possible to transport it by air, so the traffic commissioner Raghubir Singh (Jimmy Shergill) has taken this challenge and asked his team members to volunteer to drive on the speed of 120 on the roads of Mumbai which are full of Traffic.  Finally constable Godbole (Manoj Bajpai) has accepted the challenge. He was earlier has been suspended because of corruption and rejoined the force because of recommendation of Member of Parliament. Finally he proved that he is a good police man by completing his mission.

The movie is full of thrilling events; there is a unity of time in movie that it has ended in the one revolution of an earth. All the characters are suffering in their lives with different problems, and that affects other character’s life, relatedness is there. The description of time and place is perfectly presented. Incidents are woven together perfectly. The story of the movie has been written on the real incidents happened in the Chennai. The role of police and their team work has presented well.

In the starting of movie we could see that Godbole is suspended for taking bribe and his friend is trying to convince the politician by saying that he has four daughters and that was the reason of taking bribe which was not truth, girls have considered as weakness and reason of corruption which is bad presentation of a girl child. Dr. Abel has confessed that his wife was cheating him with his friend and he attempted to kill his wife because of her betrayal which shows that an educated doctor could take this kind of decision but later his wife’s apology make him feel guilty. The scenes of Bilal colony and support of public and all the hurdles in the way of Pune have been passed by Godbole very perfectly. He wanted to vanish away the stein of corruption from his uniform and he has done that.

My experience of achieving 1st Rank in University #MKBU

Achieved 1st rank in University

I would like to share one of my best experience in life...

I have got 1st rank in MA part one, not only in class but in university. My parents are feeling very proud, my teachers have also wished me best for future and appreciated my hard work and my friends are also feeling happy. I am satisfied and ready for upcoming challenges... The real journey begins now...

I have also got this rank in Semester one, but it was shocking result for all, because I was very quiet girl and a last bench student in class. All were shocked because they have never thought that I can work so hard, and that result has given me more than rank, it was all about good as well as bad experiences.

Friends are very important part of life and my all friends have encouraged me all the time. Finally the result of sleepless nights and lectures of four to five hours is declared, now it’s time to expect more and give my best.

This result is not only mine, I would love to dedicate this to my all teachers and professors who have faith and confidence in my ability and my friends as well as parents.

Thank you.

My review of the bollywood movie Ki & Ka directed by R. Balki

   Ki & Ka
Director – R. Balki
Producer – R. Balki
Written by – R. Balki
Starring – Kareena kapoor
                Arjun Kapoor

The movie Ki & Ka is a very strong attack on “Indian mind set” or we can say “Hinduism” about the role of man and woman in marriage and in society.

This is romantic comedy-drama film. The very first scene of movie is an effective satire, where Kia (Kareena) speaks about the role of woman in patriarchal society, in which Man is equal to success and Women is all about helping hand and support for husband to achieve his success. Kia defines role of women by calling her “pillar” which supports building, and also added that everyone remember building not the pillar. Same story we have in our culture, successful man is very well known but his wife is just like a piece of decoration in house.
This is the reality of our society and culture. People used to give credit to wife of a successful man for being his support system, but what is in that credit? Is it morally good to do such flattery things?

Ki & Ka has changed the role of man and woman, Kabeer is house husband and supports his wife to fulfil her dream of becoming a successful business woman but at some extent the plot has diverted from the tract as we can see in the scenes where Kia is abusing Kabeer because he is not earning, we can feel power structure that Power of earning member on non-earning one.

As a poststructuralist  critic, we look at  the movie we would find that the concept of movie looks like in support of woman, but it is totally about man, like man can be prove themselves perfect in every role, while women is always about jealousy, hatred, short tempered and sensitive.

As emotion does not follow gender, the important part in movie is emotion of jealousy. If we take an example that a very successful man is continuously surrounded by the praising of his wife which is "house-wife", he would feel jealousy and his ego would definitely hurt, the same thing has been happened with Kia, as she was so jealous with her husband who became famous by giving speeches rather than working hard like her, and she abandon him and abused a lot.

The good use of archetypes is specialty of R. Balki, in such scenes like Kabeer feels jealousy there is a use of water with the help of dancing fountain, strong flow of water suggests fall. Another is the scene of quarrel between Kia and Kabeer where Kia is one by one coming down from staircase, as she is coming down from her moral level.

The movie has a very strong issue of society, gender difference, inequality and rigid mindset of Indian society in which woman is so much neglected.  As far as feminism is concern, the movie would not get such appreciation by feminists, because of the projection of a role of wife as Kabeer, as in most of the scene kabeer is cooking, enjoying in kitty parties, and shopping, this has been projected as the work of woman, and Mangal-sutra is shown as a symbol  of wife which is not so good idea.

The definition of wife is given by Kia, as she calls Kabeer “wife”, which is not appropriate.  The main point is, centre of the attraction in movie is Kabir (Arjun Kapoor) as a house husband rather than Kia as a working woman.

Post structuralism and difference in cultural studies

Post structuralism and difference in cultural studies

Post structuralist observe a text not with only it's language and meaning but with its discourse and hidden elements.

The concept of 'differance' by Derrida is very important for the post structuralist. It gives various interpretation of one point, it is like walking on a road which leads us towards so many interesting destinations.

As per Derrida there is no meaning of word, but word leads us to the another word.. and the chain never ends so there is a concept of language and discourse, what language tries to explain can be understood by its discourse.

Dependence of inside and outside:

Every thing depends on each other in one or the other way, even the cycle of nature also depends on each other. This can be understand by an activity of dependence of inside and outside.

Activity:

1) can anyone locate or describe their house without telling the area, next house, the name of street where the house is placed ?
The answer is "No."
Thus inside of house is dependent on the outside things of the house.

2) India gate is a very famous place for Indians, but no one can locate it without Delhi.

3) gate way of india is also a very famous place, but one can not give any description of it without telling about Mumbai.

4) if we take a very simple example of jar of chocolate on table, one can say that chocolate is on the table or chocolate is in the jar, but this "on" and "in" are very important to locate the chocolate.

So the dependence of inside and outside is natural. Not a single thing is out of this law.

Here I have shared my presentations on this for more understanding :

As a post structuralist critic here is my interpretation of Deconstruction.

This blog is a response of my  classroom activity about post structuralism in paper of criticism

Here is an activity : http://dilipbarad.blogspot.in/2015/03/deconstruction-and-derrida.html

● My interpretation of Deconstruction:
Deconstruction could not be understood by anyone properly because Darrida himself denies to define it. Darrida strongly believe that to define something is to make boundaries around it. Deconstruction can be taken as a process of inquiring the origin and construction of the text. Deconstruction do not destroy the construction of any text but questions it's 'origin of origin', so one can get the idea of the existence of that text.

Deconstruction gives an idea of free play of words and not believe in dictionary meaning, as dictionary gives only another word for one word.

Deconstruction as a process happens to its own, by reading the text or watching the movie our mind gets such symbols and signs and mind works on that, and when it feels or identifies something not appropriate it attacks the work with arguments and questions the problem. It is like blasting the text and what survive is the origin of text.

It is a theory which can be applied in many ways and one can only try to complete it, because it's a kind of a process which never ends, what you have  deconstructed can be deconstruct by another person and it's never ending chain.

●As a post structuralist critic here is my interpretation of seven vows in Hindu marriage :

The Seven Vows:

1) Groom:
You will offer me food and be helpful in every way. I will cherish you and provide welfare and happiness for you and our children.
Bride:
I am responsible for the home and all household responsibilities.

2) Groom:
Together we will protect our house and children.
Bride:
I will be by your side as your courage and strength. I will rejoice in your happiness. In return, you will love me solely.

3) Groom:
May we grow wealthy and prosperous and strive for the education of our children. May our children live long.
Bride:
I will love you solely for the rest of my life, as you are my husband. Every other man in my life will be secondary. I vow to remain chaste.

4) Groom:
You have brought sacredness into my life, and have completed me. May we be blessed with noble and obedient children.
Bride:
I will shower you with joy, from head to toe. I will strive to please you in every way I can.

5) Groom: You are my best friend, and staunchest well-wisher. You have come into my life, enriching it. God bless you.
Bride:
I promise to love and cherish you for as long as I live. Your happiness is my happiness, and your sorrow is my sorrow. I will trust and honor you, and will strive to fulfill all your wishes.

6) Groom:
May you be filled with joy and peace.
Bride:
I will always be by your side.

7) Groom:
We are now husband and wife, and are one. You are mine and I am yours for eternity.
Bride:
As God is witness, I am now your wife. We will love, honor and cherish each other forever.

All the seven vows are as old as the concept of marriage. But it has not followed truly from the ancient time as we have an example of our mythological characters, which mostly concidered as perfect 'man' Lord Rama in "Ramayana" and Lord Krishna  in "Mahabharata" but on the other side Sita and Rukmani has followed it well. But now, in modern time women are aware of their importance and role in society. so one can deconstruct these rules of marriage system.

1.  As post structuralist critic first tries to take text differently, these seven vows are clearly suggests the idea of patriarchy. As man is first and most of important work and power in society is on the side of man and what woman have to do is keeping her husband happy.

2. Secondly the critic finds the similar words for interpretation. As in first four vows by groom he has mentioned children as the most important part of marriage.  in vows such statement like "I will always be your side" and "love solely" has repeated twice by the side of wife and it suggests that the trust that should be in the concept of marriage is not there.  And bride is repeatedly convincing her groom that she will make him happy in every sense she could as long as she is alive.

3. There is not such equality in the vows of bride and groom. As groom is privileged over bride to do the things on his perception while bride has to think about only her groom first. It has not unity.

4. In the third vow of bride she clearly says that every man for her is secondary, this can be problematic as her family members has not such values as she have to give to his husband and the problem is that, the  same vow has not taken by man. The other thing is she Vow to remain chaste, as she should be virginal and what about husband ? That is the question. A word "remain chaste" has multiplicity of meaning.

5. In very first vow one can feel the conditional satement that if you provide me happiness I will will cherish you and provide welfare. Same in first four vows about children suggests that from very ancient time for woman marriage is all about having children and household responsibility and take his husband as God(a hypothesis).

I would like to conclude by saying that all vows have very cultural and religious view but it has very bad depiction of women, the vows has put limits to the role and capabilities of her.

Thank you.
