Mr. Bean in this absurd world

Who doesn’t know Mr. Bean? 樂 May be we will not find a single person who doesn’t know him. All are aware with his character. Still his character is favourite among all age groups. Though you want to know more about him you can click HERE

From my schooldays I am the big fan of Mr. Bean series. Not only because his character is funny but he lives in the world of his own. I know logically it is not possible because no one can live like him unless the person is having some mental deformity. But if we observe the character of Mr. Bean, he is very intelligent and also fun loving person. He tries to make himself happy by doing efforts for himself only. We find he is little bit selfish also when he invites his friends for a Christmas party. He is also a poor man having almost no friends but yes, one girlfriend whom Bean treats badly or we can say funnily.

In my last semester of Masters I have studies some terms related existentialism. Recently when I watched an episode of Mr. Bean series I found some characteristics of it in him. Generally existentialism means,

A philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.” (Wikipedia)

Before I express my views I want you to view this video…

The character of Mr. Bean is alone living in house and has no relatives or good friends. He has one Teddy bear which he pretends that it is alive and also takes care of it (but sometimes also hurts it). We really don’t know about his past and his full name. He is happy with his life and enjoys every movement alone only. We never see him upset because of his loneliness rather he enjoys it. He treats others as he thinks he should. He never regrets for his deeds but tries to hide it as you can watch in his library visit – Click here

We can observe that he hardly speak anything except his name. His dialogues are his expressions and without saying anything he conveys his message to us. It seems like silence comedy but it is not only a comedy show.

He is very much distanced from the absurd world though he is living in it with enjoying the life. When we watch the series we can observe that he is creating humor from very trivial things like shopping, meeting with a dentist, In wedding ceremony, at cinema and having dinner in restaurant. This reminds me Harold Pinter’s play “The Birthday Party” in which he has created humor through trivial things and activities like the scene on breakfast table. The same thing we can observe in “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Becket where he creates humor in playing with hats and practicing Yoga.

It also reflects some characteristics of post-modern world like selfish attitude towards world which is like hopelessness because Mr. Bean never expects anything from other; he is a man of his own will. He do things naturally which doesn’t seem important for us but for him it is something very important. In most of the series he seems like an escapist who tries to escape from various problems of his life but every time he escapes differently. We also find that in little things which other people find interesting and exciting, he doesn’t enjoy it like the visit of Fun Park.

Whenever I am studying and I want to take break, I used to watch Mr. Bean episodes from Youtube.

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog. Please share your valuable comments on this. Enjoy watching Mr.Bean.

Classroom activity - Reading of "The Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes

This blog is part of my classroom activity. In this blog I have answered some questions through my understanding of the novel.

To view full activity – click here

Here is my response to the questions,

1.  What does Veronica meant by saying “Blood Money?

Tony got a letter and 500 pounds from the mother of Veronica, Mrs. Sara Ford. Tony was not able to understand that why she has sent him these money. Sara was dead now. He asked Veronica about the money and at that time she has replied the mail by these two words only “Blood Money”.

The meaning of this phrase “Blood Money” is when you murder someone and after that you feel guilty and want to repent, you offer some money to the family members or nearest person of the victim. Sara was guilty that she has seduced Adrian and because of the pregnancy of Sara he has committed suicide and died. It was like a murder of Adrian by Sara. She was feeling guilty and sent some money as a part of repentance. Veronica was aware about these things and that is why she has written “Blood Money” in the mail.

2.  Adrian’s diary is willed to Tony by Sarah Ford. How come Sarah Ford owned it? Why was it in the possession of Veronica?

Sara ford owned the diary of Adrian because both were in relationship with each other. Adrian was the father of Sara’s child and before committing suicide, both were happy also. As Tony said,

“Veronica’s mother had assured me the last months of Adrian’s life had been happy”

And after reading the letter of Sara Ford, Tony said that,

“Why she had written: “P.S. It may sound odd, but I think the last months of his life were happy.”

Both were happy with each other and that’s why Adrian’s diary was with Sara. After Sara’s death it was with Veronica.

3.  .Do you see any missing block – some dot which is not getting connected with the whole or dot missing to get full sense of the novel - in the plot of this psychological thriller?

There are many missing blocks are in the novel. We can find many questions which are not answered by Julian Barnes. Some things are mysterious in the novel which we have to think twice or thrice to understand and though we can’t get it. Some mysteries like,

> Why Sara hates and jealous with her own daughter Veronica?
> Why Sara warned Tony about his relationship with Veronica?
> Why Adrian got attracted or got seduced by Sara when he had Veronica as a lover?
> Why Veronica left Tony when he is considered as a good man?
> Why all teachers used to favor Adrian?
>  Why Adrian is thinking philosophically all the time?
> Why Adrian has committed suicide if he was happy in his last days?

These many questions are depended only on possibilities. Novel can’t answer these only reader can through possibilities.

4.  What do you mean by Unreliable Narrator? Is Tony Webster classifiable as Unreliable Narrator?

Yes, if we read the first part of the novel and then we compare some same incidents in both the parts, there is vast difference in what Tony narrated and the reality.

In the very beginning of the novel Tony says,

“I remember, in no particular order: —a shiny inner wrist;”

“So I need to return briefly to a few incidents that have grown into anecdotes, to some approximate memories which time has deformed into certainty. If
I can’t be sure of the actual events any more, I can at least be true to the impressions those facts left. That’s the best I can manage.”

Many times these kinds of statements come into the narrative. Even the incident of letter in first part and second part is different. In first part Tony says he has written a letter to Adrian and Veronica but in second part when we read the letter we come to know about the harshness of it.

Extension Activity - Una 2017 Presentation - 2

Dear Readers,
In this blog I have embedded two presentations which I have made for our Department’s Extension Activity at Diu and Una. I have presented this presentation in two villages - Kareni and Sangter and cities - Diu and Una.

                         2)  How to make an effective presentation?

This session was very interesting for me. I have presented this presentation in Diu college with the students of Arts and commerce. They were very much interested in this topic because they have to submit their assignments in form of presentations. Students were taking photographs of slides and also making videos of presentation. At there I have made them aware with the technique of making presentation and some basic but important tricks.

Here is the presentation

Extension Activity - Una 2017 Presentation - 1

Dear Readers,

In this blog I have embedded two presentations which I have made for our Department’s Extension Activity at Diu and Una. I have presented this presentation in two villages - Kareni and Samter and cities - Diu and Una.

1)  Prepositions

I have prepared this presentation for school children and presented this in class 10-A and 10-B in the government school of Sangter village.

I have also presented this in Class 11th at Chanakya Science school, Una. They were aware about the concept of preposition but the main purpose was to ask them that which learning they have enjoyed, with technology or without it. One of the students told me that this technique is good because it has pictures for better understanding. It is true that pictures and Gifs help teacher to avoid using mother tongue in teaching English language.

In kareni village I have taught this in different manner, it was more like interaction because there were college students.

The purpose of presenting this presentation was to show them that how easily and innovatively we can teach language through technology. I have also demonstrated that how to make presentation and what are some basic features and tricks of making good presentation.
