Recently
I have seen a Gujarati movie “Kevi Rite Jais”. The movie is all about an
ambition of a boy and protagonist character Harish Patel who wants to get the visa
of USA. After watching the first half of movie I was thinking that the problem
of the protagonist is to get the visa of USA and how he would be able to reach
America but the real journey is different than we think.
In
starting scenes, we could observe that how the charm of USA has been presented and
it is also a fact that most of Indians are very much influence by an “AMERICAN DREAM” and
follows it madly. The dream of Harish Patel is actually influenced by his
father’s ambition and revenge towards his old friend. There is a use of flashback
technique to show the past condition and how each character’s present is
affected by the competition of Bachubhai (father of Harish) with his friend Ishwar
Patel. Bachubhai and Ishwarbhai had a dream to get settle together in America
but Ishwarbhai has left India without informing Bachubhai and then the
competition starts. The main satire in this movie is on Patel community because
the word Patel is again and again used by various characters, but I think this
is not only about Patels, this issue is about whole Gujarat and all those
foreign fascinated Indians.
When
we observe the struggle of Harish in getting visa and the way he rejected we
could find that how Gujarati people are facing problem and very first hurdle is
knowledge of English language. Horror of English language and people is
presented very humorously in movie by nightmares which haunt Harish. Some visa
companies uses illegal process and cheat people who wants to go foreign, Harish
also got trapped by these fraud and then the struggle goes on.
There are such observation which I would
like to share, first is the over ambitious father and how from the childhood of
his children he forces them to get the visa. Second is about getting visa by marring
NRI girls. Marriage has become a business for those who want to settle down in
USA, they will marry a girl/boy who has green card and became the citizen of
their country. One more thing I would like to share is the servant of the rich
visa agent was an African man who was speaking fluent Gujarati, maybe he it is
not connected with any racial discrimination but as a student of postcolonial
studies I thought that why he was a negro man rather than any white man. There is
also a white man in the film who was the tutor of Harish and also involved in
an illegal activity of a Gujarati agent. There is also a parallel
story of an old woman whose son is in USA and forgotten his parents, which
shows the condition of some poor parents who have sent their sons in foreign.
Most of Indians like to follow the western life style and wants to settle down in USA without knowing the facts. Here is one video which speaks reality of USA and What Americans think about their nation. All Americans cannot be agree with this but at one or the other way it is truth.

Overall the movie is good and presents the major problem of 'American dream' in a very light way. We could say that the problem in the movie was all because of a competition and ego problem between friends.
