Who doesn’t know Mr. Bean? May be we
will not find a single person who doesn’t know him. All are aware with his
character. Still his character is favourite among all age groups. Though you
want to know more about him you can click HERE
From my schooldays I am the big fan of
Mr. Bean series. Not only because his character is funny but he lives in the
world of his own. I know logically it is not possible because no one can live
like him unless the person is having some mental deformity. But if we observe
the character of Mr. Bean, he is very intelligent and also fun loving person.
He tries to make himself happy by doing efforts for himself only. We find he is
little bit selfish also when he invites his friends for a Christmas party. He
is also a poor man having almost no friends but yes, one girlfriend whom Bean
treats badly or we can say funnily.
In my
last semester of Masters I have studies some terms related existentialism.
Recently when I watched an episode of Mr. Bean series I found some
characteristics of it in him. Generally existentialism means,
“A philosophical theory or
approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and
responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.”
(Wikipedia)
Before I express my views I want you to
view this video…
The character of Mr. Bean is alone living in house and has no relatives or good friends. He has one Teddy bear which he pretends that it is alive and also takes care of it (but sometimes also hurts it). We really don’t know about his past and his full name. He is happy with his life and enjoys every movement alone only. We never see him upset because of his loneliness rather he enjoys it. He treats others as he thinks he should. He never regrets for his deeds but tries to hide it as you can watch in his library visit – Click here
We can observe that he hardly speak anything except his name. His
dialogues are his expressions and without saying anything he conveys his
message to us. It seems like silence comedy but it is not only a comedy
show.
He is very much distanced from the absurd
world though he is living in it with enjoying the life. When we watch the
series we can observe that he is creating humor from very trivial things like
shopping, meeting with a dentist, In wedding ceremony, at cinema and having dinner in restaurant. This reminds me
Harold Pinter’s play “The Birthday Party” in which he has created humor through
trivial things and activities like the scene on breakfast table. The same thing
we can observe in “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Becket where he creates humor
in playing with hats and practicing Yoga.
It also reflects some characteristics
of post-modern world like selfish attitude towards world which is like
hopelessness because Mr. Bean never expects anything from other; he is a man of
his own will. He do things naturally which doesn’t seem important for us but for
him it is something very important. In most of the series he seems like an
escapist who tries to escape from various problems of his life but every time
he escapes differently. We also find that in little things which other people
find interesting and exciting, he doesn’t enjoy it like the visit of Fun Park.
Whenever I am studying and I
want to take break, I used to watch Mr. Bean episodes from Youtube.
I hope you enjoyed reading this
