"The Postmaster" is written by Tagore in 1891. He has presented a story of an unnamed Postmaster who has started working in the village named "Ulapur." The postmaster was from the huge city Calcutta. The postmaster is not happy in the remote village. Postmaster has nobody to talk and he feels loneliness without any friend and company. He also tried to write poetry in his free hours.

There is a girl named Ratan who works for Postmaster and can be considered as his only company. He started teaching her alphabets. Ratan was an orphan girl and she was feeling great attachment with Postmaster, as per Ratan, Postmaster was her only Family. Ratan also has taken care of Postmaster when he was ill. On the Other side Postmaster was not happy in the village. He has sent an application but it was rejected and that is why he has resigned from the post. New postmaster came and he left the village. Ratan asked him to take her with him but he denied. Ratan was still with hope that one day his postmaster will come and take her with him.
At the end, Tagore comments about human nature,

"Alas for our foolish human nature! Its fond mistakes are persistent."
