Introduction:

English language has developed very fast in India. It was the period of Indian Renaissance in which English language has put its influence upon the mind of Indians. English drama, novel, poetry and tradition were influencing the literature of India and by the medium of literature, people were started believing in modern trend than the regular rigid tradition.

The superiority of an English language was all because of the Indian customs which were evil. Some Indian writers, socialists also helped India by accepting the English trend and modern culture by breaking down all rigid conservative shackles.

Important Notes:

There are three sections in which we can distribute the growth and development of English language.

1. 1857 to 1900 - English education grew rapidly

2. 1920 to 1947 - English is fade away as the result of independence movement.

3. 1947 - Onwards English begun to be in demand as a window to the world.

English people came to India for trade and then started ruling India by different political strategies. To educate clerk, they begin to educate Indian people, that is how Indian people begin to learn English language. Especially for creative writers, it became a prayer to imbibe and implied a language. Newspapers and magazines flourished during this period like anything.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the first Indian writer who started writing in English; he was a fluent speaker of English language. He was a social reformer, so his writing was utilitarian.

English came in India and bring translation with them. English classics were translated in India and Indians got inspired by them. During the decade of Gandhian leadership, some idealists have adapted to throw away the national evil. 'Khadi' was set against Mill-made cloths with concern of economical beliefs.

Some way Hindi or Hindustani a national language was accepted to raise our self-respect and promote a feeling of unity in our country, But after almost forty years 'Khadi' was no more displaced than the English has displaced Hindi.

Shree Rajgopalchari , South Indian leader, come out by favouring English language as a medium of instruction in university, for international purpose as a medium of higher law of court and learning of journals.

What he believes is that English language will bring unity in disintegrated India. He considered 'Hindi' as a 'synthetic word' and proposed English as a 'future language'. English is a window to the world. English is able for vast publication and living in against the Hindi. Now English is growing as one of the most read and written language, it is a bridge between east and west.

To reconstruct modern India, Indian English writings also can be a national literature. In this manner, the literature written in India, expresses its emotional feelings or Indians in English language.

As far as literature is concern, many names came before us. Sarojini Naydu, an outstanding woman of her age, a gifted poetess, she has presented imageries in her works. Tagore is a great phenomenon in literary development, special feature of Tagore is that his lyric in English is that they are prose poems.

Love, nature, hatred, intrigue, jealousy are spoken by Mulk Raj Anand's "Untouchable", "Coolie", R. K. Narayan's "Swami and Friends", these are some famous novels. Myth, legends and religion is also well described in Indian English literature. Stream of Consciousness, practice, and realism in by R. K. Narayan in the "Guide"

Conclusion:

Indian English literature has provided a view to India, a view of mannerism (in evil rituals and customs), education (link language for the world), modernization and western culture. By the help of English literature and education, India find a new path in the history of itself, and by the medium of Indian English literature, India has presented its view to the world, and culture to the world.
