5. Developing a range of style
“Among Giants
be a dwarf, among dwarf be a giant, but among equals aim to be an equal.”
1. Powerful style:
Powerful style is widely used by those who see themselves as highly
analytical and result focused. Presenters who use powerful style see himself
through his audience’s eyes. User of powerful style, analyses each point of his
presentation very deeply, user of powerful style can be seen as strong and
competent.
User of powerful style uses forceful language such as,
“Must, have
to, cannot”
They believe in stressing their own knowledge of the subject or
introduce facts in their way to make it difficult to disagree with them. He
believes in making strong statements.
Presenter of this style do not agree on the view point of others, he
believes in creating pressure be using – time is short!! Some of the audience
may see user of powerful style as aggressive and arrogant.
2. The balancing style:
Balancing style stands as an opposite to the powerful style as:
Presenters who use balancing style are open minded. He believes in
stressing future possibilities. Unlike a powerful style users, user of this
style avoid giving strange statements they avoid impression that they have
final answer, balancing style users use words like,
“May, might,
probably”
These words indicate openness. Balancing style users avoid disagreement
with people directly, instead of that they expresses their disagreement positively
with the phrases such as,
"You may
be right but..."
Expressing views in this way, user sounds less arrogant and sounds
polite. Users of this style do not believe in pressuring his audience and prefer
calm working environment. He is ready to hear everyone's point of view.
3. The Questioning style:
User of questioning style will be seen by the audience as interactive
speaker who is interested in listening other's opinions to bring the solution. When
a presenter implies this style, he can get information from the audience
regarding all difficulties and their knowledge about the topic.
Questioning style helps a lot when a presenter wants to clarify things. He
can use this style in order to get the knowledge of audience and their level. Questioning
allows audience a presenter to get involved, to participate, to give, and exchange
opinions.
4. The Personal style:
Personal style user believes in stressing positively at every stage of
the presentation. They frequently use words like good, great, interesting etc,
so that presenter can generate positive atmosphere when everyone feels good.
Personal style users emphasize on things that are common between him and
his audience to create personal relationship.
This user shares personal experiences
or interest, and presenter who choose this style, believes that he is having
similar area of interest and viewpoints like his audience.
User of this style involves or rather gives importance to
"feelings" of his audience. Personal style user believes that human
can add energy and interest in the audience and therefore presenter believes in
using humour according to the situation.
User of this style emphasizing more on feelings which create "sense
of we" among the audience. He believes in seeing himself from the
audience's eyes. User of this style will prefer eye contact and will tended to
smile a lot.
