Introduction of Business Communication - Definition - BBA - 1

Introduction of Business Communication:

Human beings cannot live in society without communication. Often society punishes men and women who do not behave properly by “ex-communicating” them. When a criminal is put in the jail the idea is to prevent him from communicating with the other members of society.

Communication is as old as man himself and humans start communicating from birth. When a baby cries it is communicating its need for attention or food. Any transmission of a meaningful message, which is understood, is communication.

The word – Communication - Meaning

The English word communication is derived from the Latin term ‘communis’, which means “to make common, to transmit, to impart”. All the three meanings are important but the general meaning is “Making common”

Communication – to make common – sharing and interaction

When a message is sent out it becomes communication only when it is understood, acknowledges, reacted to or replied to by the receiver. Human communication is not only depended by words, but it can be by actions, body language, dress, gestures, secret codes, signals, facial expressions and even by silence. It could also be unconscious or accidental.

Definitions of Communication:

1. Keith Davis

“Communication is a process of passing information and understanding from one person to another”

2. The American Management Association

“Communication is any behaviour that results in an exchange of meaning”

3. George Terry

“Communication is an exchange of facts, ideas, opinions or emotions by two or more persons”

4. Peter Little

“Communication is a process by which information is passed between individuals and/or organizations by means of previously agreed symbols.”

5. D. E. McFarland:

“Communication may be broadly defined as the process of interaction among human beings. More specifically it is the process by which meanings are perceived and understandings are reached among human beings.”
